Coral Gables
Coral
Gables, also known as The City Beautiful, is located about five miles
southwest of Miami in Miami-Dade County in tropical South Florida. As
of 2005 U.S. Census estimates, this exceptional city had a population
of 42,871.
This city, comprised mostly of Mediterranean architecture, was created
in the 1920s by George Merrick. Coral Gables is considered one of, if
not the first, planned communities and the progenitor of the gated community
and homeowners association. Merrick designed this city to be pedestrian
friendly by creating a downtown that was only four blocks wide by about
two miles long.
As with any city, location is an important key to its success and Coral
Gables was lucky enough to be chosen as the site for the University of
Miami in 1925 and now sits only four miles from Miami International Airport.
These key institutions and a thriving business district have attracted
many affluent professionals and families to this area. There are comprehensive
medical, educational and recreational infrastructures, and add to this,
the fact that Coral Gables has some of the best restaurants, boutiques,
antique shops and art galleries in all of south Florida, and its no mystery
why this is such a desirable place to live and work these days.
