BY ANDRES VIGLUCCI – Miami Herald
With one of the biggest gifts ever pledged to a South Florida cultural institution, a prominent Miami philanthropic couple has given a rocket boost to the slow-moving effort to build the Miami Science Museum a new high-tech home. The $35 million pledge from medical entrepreneur Phillip Frost and his wife, Patricia, means the long-planned, $275 million museum will break ground later this year in what is now Bicentennial Park in downtown Miami, with completion expected by the end of 2014, administrators said.

On Saturday, March 26th, 2011 the Board of Trustees of the Miami Science Museum will host the Ninth Annual Miami Science Museum Gala at the JW Marriott Marquis & Hotel Beaux Arts in downtown Miami. Jon and I, along with Nicole and Edgar Lozano are delighted to be Chairing this event. An exciting and exceptional evening showcasing the mission of the Miami Science Museum and its new waterfront project is planned.
Since 2004, when local residents voted a $175 million bond to support the new Miami Science Museum, many volunteers, staff and donors have labored to reach the Concept Design benchmark, which has now defined an extraordinary iconic building featuring multiple aquaria, a wildlife center with gardens and animals, a state-of-the-art digital planetarium, and an exhibit space portraying science and technology in the most engaging way possible. This educational resource will inspire dreams and motivate people of all ages to discover new skills and enjoy learning about the world around them.
For more information on event sponsorship, please contact Ruth Robinson at (305) 646-4249 or rrobinson@miamisci.org.
We look forward to celebrating this exciting new project with you at what promises to be an unforgettable evening of fun among the stars!

The eighth annual Fed Ex/ St. Jude Angels and Star Miami Gala fundraising dinner is scheduled to take place this Saturday, May 15 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Downtown Miami. This annual fundraising event helps children with cancer by funding St Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s groundbreaking research and state-of-the-art lifesaving care across the US and the world.
This year’s installation of this charity event promises to be as glamorous as always and will be hosted by Daisy Fuentes, Lily Estefan and Javier Romero as well as Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Juanes. Juanes will also be presented with the 2010 Al Rashid hope Award. There will also be other Latin celebrities from the television, movie and film industries on hand to help Fed Ex/ St. Jude Angels and Star Miami in their fundraising efforts.
This year’s masquerade-themed gala will feature performances by some of today’s top Latin artists and a silent auction. Tickets for this star-studded event will cost $350 and tables will run from $3,500 to $25,000. For more information, please contact Paola Cassana at paola.cassana@stjude.org or call (305) 265-1371.
St Jude is the second largest and best known children’s health-related charity in the US. Since St Jude’s Hospital opened in 1962, the physicians and scientists at St Jude have pioneered treatments that have increased overall survival rates for children with cancer from less than 20% to 80%. St Jude’s daily operating costs top the $1.5 million mark, with the majority of these finds covered by public donations.
Hopefully, with the help of Miami’s more affluent residents, this year’s Fed Ex/ St. Jude Angels and Star Miami Gala fundraising dinner will be the most successful ever.
